Semax may aid cognitive recovery after ischemic stroke
A new trial follows 120 stroke patients over six months of intranasal Semax treatment.
by Editorial team
The trial
One hundred twenty patients within 48 hours of ischemic stroke were randomized to standard care plus intranasal Semax or standard care alone for 10 days.
Cognitive function was tracked at 1, 3, and 6 months.
Results
The Semax group showed faster improvement on cognitive scales at 1 and 3 months, with the gap narrowing by 6 months.
No significant differences were observed in mortality or recurrent stroke rates.
Interpretation
The peptide may accelerate cognitive recovery rather than change long-term outcomes.
Independent replication outside Russia remains limited.
